There are many different species of yucca plants, with the Yucca elata being New Mexico's state flower.
Interesting fact, yucca flowers are known as "Lamparas de Dios" which is Spanish for "Lamps of God", because of the white flowers that adorn the plant's tall flower stalk.
Yucca elata's roots are used to make soap and the leaves provide materials for baskets. Another common name for Yucca elata is "Soaptree Yucca".
Some yuccas have edible flowers and fruits, I personally tried some grilled yucca elata pods, not bad!
Native yuccas are very heat, drought and cold tolerant.
Yuccas are great for desert Southwest landscapes. Very low maintenance plants, just watch out for the sharp pointed leaves!
